Steve Wolf's Bio
Wolf's love affair with radio began at the tender age of 14 when
he began spinning records for a small town station in his home state
of Michigan. After a move south, Wolf became a D.J. and engineer
for a number of radio stations in South Texas where he discovered
his passion for the technical side of broadcasting, repairing and
installing broadcast equipment.
At 19, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to put his own radio station
on the air. He recalls, "My dream was always to own my own radio
station." After negotiations with the local cable company, he put
a cable FM station on the air called The WOLF. The WOLF featured
70s and 80s top 40 music and additional specialty programming. The
station had a successful four year run before Wolf moved to Nashville,
Tennessee to take a job at a larger station.
It was during this time that Wolf's life radically changed. He was
losing his vision as a result of a childhood accident and as his
sight began to fail. Wolf was unable to continue his engineering
work in radio, however, he quickly learned to read Braille, to travel
independently with the use of a Seeing Eye(R) dog, and most importantly
to use a computer with adaptive technology. As he learned to master
the new technology, he began training other blind people to use
computers, a job he found both rewarding and enjoyable.
In the winter of 1998, Wolf discovered Shoutcast technology and
was able to revive his original passion and return to his profession
as a broadcaster. With the aid of his talking computer, Wolf downloaded
the Shoutcast server software and learned how to broadcast directly
from his computer.
With the means to broadcast again, The WOLF was quickly resurrected.
On January 18, 1999 The WOLF came back online with a growl!
The WOLF is now able to provide its music to millions each month
and plans to support itself through advertising. Now reaching a
global audience on the Internet, The WOLF and its popular web site
WOLFFM.com have grown from a pup into a ferocious animal.
WOLF FM is housed in the Wolf Studios located in the 20th and Grand
HighRise in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. The studio is also capable
of producing live shows and other production work. WOLF FM remains
a fully automated station that plays a mix of 70s, 80s and 90s top
40 music. The music is processed for the highest sound quality and
